SyntheticMR‘s SyMRI NEURO, a software package that can segment and measure myelin volume in the brain, is now available for use by radiologists in the U.S. through an agreement with Siemens Healthineers and its syngo.via magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) visualization platform, a press release states.

SyMRI NEURO’s integrated software package is capable of providing quantitative data, performing automatic brain tissue segmentation, and can adjust to different types of contrast weighted images with a single brain scan that takes about six minutes, and a post-processing time of less than 10 seconds, Siemens Healthineers states on its webpage.

Quantifying myelin, the fatty substance that protects nerve fibers, is particularly important in monitoring patients with neurodegenerative disorders associated with myelin loss, including multiple sclerosis (MS) and dementia.

Its features, in combination with Siemens’ MRI systems operated with the syngo.via MRI visualization software, support faster MRI scans and allow clinicians to have access to detailed radiological information in a shorter period of time.

The package “offers [radiologists] multi-modality reading and fast 3D results to speed up daily routine. It includes the latest innovations and AI-enabled features to take your reading to the next level. In addition, it enables you to extend and customize your reading and reporting capabilities with an open platform,” Siemens states.

“Siemens Healthineers can now also offer SyMRI as a part of the syngo.via platform in the clinical practice to the U.S. market,” Isabelle Hachette, global account manager at SyntheticMR, said in the release. “We strive to support a faster workflow and provide objective decision support to radiologists, and we are now able to work towards this goal together with Siemens Healthineers syngo.via team in the U.S. market.”

“Through our partnership with SyntheticMR, we are further transforming syngo.via into an independent advanced visualization platform,” added Oliver Klinkow, customer relationship manager at Syngo. “We want to empower our users to autonomously expand their clinical capabilities with innovative solutions from a multitude of international vendors.”

The SyMRI NEURO software package can be viewed, and its download may be possible as a trial, at this site; other tools can also be found at the Siemens Healthineers Digital Marketplace.

Measuring the volume of myelin in the brain cab also be helpful in monitoring brain development in children, and in studying brain alterations in patients with certain psychological disorders, such as autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and schizophrenia.
